The William Morris at Home Spring Thicket Mineral Oxford pillowcase pair showcases one of John Henry Dearle’s most elegant archive designs, originally created as a wallpaper in 1893 and preserved in the William Morris Gallery. Following the same structural principles as Morris’ Lily and Pomegranate pattern from 1886, Spring Thicket is arranged in a symmetrical net repeat, with a central cluster of tulips framed by flowing foliage. The flowering hawthorn woven throughout the design unifies the composition, creating a rich, organic rhythm characteristic of Morris & Co. craftsmanship.
Recoloured for bedding in a sophisticated palette of teal, mineral green, pink and soft yellow, the design is printed onto a luxurious cotton sateen base. Each pillowcase is finished with a delicate blush-pink Baratta stitch, adding a refined decorative detail. The reverse features Morris’ Borage design in a complementary soft-yellow shade, inspired by a printed cotton fragment produced by Wardle & Co., the dyeing and printing firm that collaborated closely with Morris before production moved to Merton Abbey in 1881.
